James B. Washington Education and Sports
And Gallery 1060 Collaboration
At a gallery reception on August 5, 2021 from 5:30 to 7:30, Gallery 1060 at First City Art Center will be featuring as guest artists the children of the James B Washington Education and Sports nonprofit group.
The JBWES group is a nonprofit recently on the cover of the Pensacola News Journal in an article “Basketball as Bait”.  This organization is providing a solution to the cycle of poverty, violence, and incarceration that swirls through our disadvantaged neighborhoods here in Pensacola and the nation.  James “Benny” Washington has dedicated himself to providing education, resources and opportunity to “at risk” youth in our area through basketball, tutoring, summer camps and many other programs.
Recently the JBWES organization held their 2021 summer camp.  Lisa Bosarge, a local artist,  helped the participants make collaged self-portraits that caught the eye of Gallery 1060.  At the gallery we were putting together an art show for August centered around “collaboration”.
Collaboration was the keyword.  JBWES  survives on collaboration.  The organization is run by volunteers and donations from our community, to improve the lives of our Pensacola children. The space that they occupy on Palafox St is much too small for the demand.  The camp this summer received almost 40 applications, however there was only space to take 17 kids.
The art show in August is going to be a collection of the Gallery 1060 artists and the amazing art of the children at JBWES.  When we saw the work these youth created with Lisa Bosarge, we knew we could all create something bigger – awareness.
We all need to be part of the solution.  Benny’s group, has seen undeniable results.  There were 14 middle school children in the tutorial program this year.  Every single one of them made at least a 3.0.  Many more of our underserved youth in Pensacola WANT to participate in Benny’s programs.  He wants to provide these children and our community with a PROVEN solution.  Please help us spotlight these children, Benny Washington and JBWES.
