Thursday May 9th
Afternoon, 1:00 – 5:00 p.m.
This ceramics-focused, hands-on, one day workshop will cover a variety of techniques related to surface decoration on pottery and sculpture. The goal for the class is that you will come away with a better understanding of how to approach surface decoration and how you can apply these techniques to what you are making. We will begin with painting exercises and brush techniques that help loosen up the arms and wrists creating imagery with movement and flow. A brief talk about materials, things to consider when choosing brushes and underglazes, glazing tips, etc. Then we will jump in on decorating your own work. Open to wheel thrown, hand-built, and sculptural work. If it has surface area, we can decorate it!
All skill levels welcome.
Class will be held in Yellow Classroom Building 3.
Things you will need to bring for the workshop:
4-8 pieces a mix of bisque fired and bone dry pieces. A couple plates, tiles, or flat objects are recommended but not required. All different shapes and sizes are encouraged. Smooth surfaces are easier to work with so avoid heavily textured pieces.
A selection of brushes in a variety of sizes. Soft and medium bristled watercolor brushes and synthetic/taklon recommended (Windsor and Newton’s Cotman Series are a good option). No oil painting brushes or stiff bristle brushes (you can bring them if you want to experiment but you may have difficulty painting with them)
Cup/Mason jar to rinse brushes
Reference Imagery! This can be printed black and white or color photos, books, a phone/ipad with images, or sketches/paintings. Something to go off of when painting is helpful because it’s easy to get brain freeze with a lot of new information coming at you.
Selection of underglazes: I recommend AMACO underglazes however Mayco is an option as well.
Underglaze colors you will need: Black, and a second or third color of your choice (I recommend a bright color because you will want some contrast)
