Drawing 101 is a great course for both beginner and intermediate artists. This class is an introductory course to drawing from observation. Students will learn to accurately and realistically draw objects from life. Over the course of the six-week class students will learn vocabulary, tools, techniques, and skills. Our ultimate goal is to learn to see and to become
comfortable with your drawing skills.

Week 1: Introduction
The students will be introduced to the basic tools and techniques we will be working with throughout
the class. The instructor will discuss how to observe various subjects focusing on shape, light and
shadows. A brief demonstration will be given in beginning techniques for drawing lines. The students
will then practice developing good hand/eye coordination by rendering various basic shapes until it
becomes a natural movement.
Week 2: Line/Shape
We will discuss scale, perspective and form and learn some of the basic measuring techniques. We
will implement them to create our first drawing while continuing to practice hand/eye coordination.
Week 3: Value
Values! Values! Values! Light against dark which gives shape. We will start with a basic oval and
move on to other shapes using various lighting.
Week 4: Value, Edges and Composition
We will continue to work with values and observing. We will discuss different types of edges and the
application of each type. We will talk about selecting a composition and how to simplify.
Week 5+6: Final Drawing
In our final two sessions we will work on using all of our new skills and techniques to complete a final
drawing in two 3-hour sessions.
