Connect with clay as you learn basic hand building techniques. We will use simple approaches to create forms, functional and decorative (pinch, coil, slab, slump). We will discuss different ways, philosophical and technical, to approach the clay and encourage finding your own imagery and marks to add narrative surface interest.

If you are new to FCAC, please see the campus map at the bottom of the page for studio location.

Instructor – Lou Mitchell Courtney:
She received her BFA in Design from UNCGreensboro after graduating high school from the NC School of the Arts in Visual Art.
Having grown up in North Carolina, a state known for its craftsmanship, Lou Mitchell Courtney was fortunate to have family that valued textiles, fine paintings, sculpture, antiques, folk art, and architecture, not only for their aesthetic beauty but for the methods by which they were made. Courtney has experience with many art mediums and techniques and in various scales- painting miniatures as well as backdrops for theatre, designing and sculpting originals for cast furniture and accessories, and small figurative bronzes. For several years she freelanced for furniture companies, designing and creating original sculptures and sculptural cast furniture.  She returned to clay sculpting in 2002, initially focusing on custom art tile installations and handmade sinks (sold across the Southeast for nearly a decade). During the past 8 years she also designed 2 public art sculptures in steel (’Starlight’ and ‘Jubilee!’) and has won awards at various art shows.
Currently her work can be seen at Visual Index gallery in NC and at Gallery 1060 gallery in Pensacola.
